A Free Markbook, Not Just Free Marking

GradeDrive has always been about one thing: taking the marking off a teacher's evenings. What we haven't talked about publicly is what happens after the marks are awarded, because that's where most departments' actual workload lives too, in spreadsheets that track scores across a term, calculate percentages, and try to answer "who's on track and who isn't" without anyone re-typing a single number.

That's now built into GradeDrive, and it's free. Not a free trial, not a limited tier: every GradeDrive account, on every plan including the free one, now includes Tracking & Monitoring, a class markbook with grade tracking, question-level analysis, and full marksheet export. It doesn't touch your page allowance, because it isn't part of the AI marking product at all. It's a second free tool that happens to live in the same account.

What's Actually In It

Classes and courses. Set up a class the way you already think about it (a name, a subject, a year group), group classes into courses if you teach the same students across multiple assessments, and add students either by typing them in one at a time or importing a class list from a CSV or spreadsheet. Nothing here requires you to touch AI marking at all; you can use the tracker for classwork, homework, anything you'd otherwise be keeping in a spreadsheet.

A live markbook. Rows are students, columns are assessments. Enter a mark and the grid calculates each student's percentage and running average, plus a class average per assessment and overall, live, as you type. Sort by name or by mark. Every cell is click-to-edit, with keyboard flow between cells so entering a class set of marks doesn't mean thirty separate clicks.

Question-level analysis (QLA). Where an assessment's marks carry per-question detail, the markbook can show a breakdown by question or topic, not just a total, so a department can see which specific questions a class struggled with, not only which students did.

Grade tracking with targets. Attach a grading method to a class, GCSE (9-1), GCE A-level (A*-E), IB Diploma (7-1) or BTEC (single award), and the markbook shows grades against your own boundaries, not just raw percentages. Set a target grade per student and the tracker shows value-added, the gap between a student's target and what they actually achieved, on every graded assessment.

A marksheet for every assessment, and export for all of it. Every assessment column has its own marksheet view: the full breakdown for that assessment, including QLA where it's available. Export any of it as CSV or XLSX, whether you want the raw markbook for your own records, a single assessment's marksheet, or a class list to move between systems.

What's Manual Today (and What's Coming)

To be upfront about where the two products currently meet: getting a set of AI-marked results into a class's markbook is a manual step right now. Enter the scores yourself or import them via CSV, the same as any other assessment column. Automatic sync, so an AI-marked assessment lands in the right class's markbook without you touching it, is on the roadmap, not shipped. We'd rather say that plainly than let a feature sound more finished than it is.

Why Free

Every other tracker in this category, spreadsheets included, asks a teacher to maintain two separate systems: one for marking, one for tracking progress. We built Tracking & Monitoring as a free, permanent part of every account because it removes an entire second tool from a teacher's term, not because it's a loss-leading trial for something we plan to charge for later. The tracking code path in GradeDrive never checks your plan and never counts against your page allowance. It's simply included.

If you're a department head or SLT evaluating GradeDrive for a whole department, this is worth factoring into the comparison: you're not buying an AI marker and separately paying for (or fighting with) a tracking spreadsheet. Whichever plan a school is on, every teacher in it gets the tracker too.

Getting Started

If you already have a GradeDrive account, the tracker lives in the console under its own tab. Create a class, add your students (typed in or imported from a CSV), add an assessment column, and start entering marks, or bring across the AI-marked results you already have. If you're new to GradeDrive, start for free and you'll have both the marking tool and the tracker from the first sign-up.

Is the GradeDrive class tracker really free?

Yes. Every account on every plan, including the free plan, includes the full Tracking & Monitoring tool: classes, markbook, question-level analysis, grade tracking with targets, and marksheet export. It doesn't use any of your page allowance.

Do I need to use GradeDrive's AI marking to use the tracker?

No. The tracker works as a standalone markbook for any assessment, marked by AI or by hand. You enter or import the marks either way.

Can I export a marksheet or the whole class markbook?
