AI Marking

AI marking for GCSE and A-level exam papers.

AI marking means an AI reads a student's answer, checks it against your mark scheme, and suggests a mark for a teacher to review before anything counts. Here is what that looks like at GCSE and A-level, which subjects it covers, and the real numbers behind it.

A mark isn't recorded until a teacher sees it.

A teacher uploads the mark scheme and the student papers. GradeDrive reads each answer against that scheme, criterion by criterion, and suggests a mark with the reasoning shown alongside it. The teacher reviews every suggestion next to the student's actual answer before it's recorded, and can accept or change any of it.

That review step is why the subjects below are the only ones GradeDrive marks: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths are the subjects where a mark scheme states its criteria clearly enough, at both GCSE and A-level, for that review to be fast rather than a second full marking pass.

AI GCSE marking.

At GCSE, mark schemes are point-based or level-of-response, and the exam board writes out exactly what earns each mark before a script is ever seen. That structure is what AI marking needs to be reliable, and it's where GradeDrive starts.

GCSE Biology
Structured short-answer questions and level-of-response extended writing, marked against the same point-based criteria your scheme already states. Read the guide
GCSE Chemistry
Calculations and defined-answer questions, where the scheme states the acceptable working and the acceptable answer. Read the guide
GCSE Physics
Working shown step by step and checked against the scheme's own method and answer marks. Read the guide
GCSE Maths
Method marks and answer marks kept separate, so correct working earns credit even when the final answer doesn't. Read the guide
GCSE Combined Science
The same marking across Biology, Chemistry and Physics papers taken as one combined qualification. Read the guide

AI A level marking.

A-level papers lean harder on extended writing, evaluation questions and multi-step working, where credit for a correct method has to survive an error further down the page. GradeDrive follows the same mark-scheme logic a teacher would: crediting the method where it's right, independent of what happens next.

A-level Biology
Extended-writing and evaluation questions marked against level-of-response descriptors, a format A-level Biology leans on more than GCSE does. Read the guide
A-level Chemistry
Multi-step calculations and mechanism questions, where an error partway through doesn't cost every mark that follows. Read the guide
A-level Physics
Longer, multi-part calculations and extended-response questions marked against the descriptors the exam board publishes. Read the guide
A-level Maths
Multi-step proofs and follow-through marks, so a slip in one line doesn't zero out correct method in the next. Read the guide
A-level Further Maths
The same follow-through marking, extended to Further Maths' harder multi-step proofs. Read the guide

How accurate is AI marking?

Across summer 2026, GradeDrive processed 216,000 marks over 2,300 submissions, and 99.2% of those marks survived a teacher's review unchanged: our own measure of agreement with a teacher's judgement, drawn from our own production database, not an independent benchmark. Two separate case studies tested that further against official AQA mark schemes, on material AQA itself chose as hardest to mark consistently: a quadratic-weighted kappa of 0.885 (77.5% exact agreement) on GCSE Physics, and 0.864 (70.3% exact agreement) on A-level Mathematics.

AI marking, in short.

What does ‘AI marking’ mean?
It means an AI reads a student's answer, checks it against the mark scheme a teacher uploads, and suggests a mark for each criterion. Nothing is final until a teacher reviews it: GradeDrive shows the student's answer, the mark scheme and the suggested mark side by side, and a teacher can accept or change any of them before marks are recorded.
Can AI mark GCSE exam papers?
Yes. GradeDrive marks GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths papers, including Combined Science, against point-based and level-of-response mark schemes.
Can AI mark A-level exam papers?
Yes. GradeDrive marks A-level Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths, including extended-writing, evaluation questions and multi-step proofs with follow-through marks.
Does AI marking work with any exam board?
GradeDrive marks against whichever mark scheme a teacher uploads, so it isn't tied to one board. The two independent case studies on our accuracy page tested specifically against official AQA mark schemes.
How accurate is AI marking with GradeDrive?
99.2% of marks survived a teacher's review unchanged across summer 2026, and two SSRN case studies found a quadratic-weighted kappa of 0.885 on GCSE Physics and 0.864 on A-level Maths against official AQA marks. Full methodology and limits are on our accuracy page.
Is student data safe when AI marks their work?
Scripts are handled under the same terms as the rest of GradeDrive. See our security and privacy pages for encryption, retention and data-processing detail.
